Train Hawking 火車叫賣
In the early days of Taiwan’s rail travel, long-distance journeys on slow or local trains could take hours. With limited onboard services, passengers relied on brief station stops to buy food, drinks, and small essentials.
Vendors, known as “hawkers,” would rush up to the carriages carrying wooden trays strapped to their shoulders. On each tray was a mix of daily needs—newspapers, boxed meals, candy, drinks, even books. It was a welcome sight for travelers and became one of the most memorable features of train travel at the time.
This sculpture captures that moment of quick exchange and quiet excitement, when the train paused and passengers prepared for the next stretch of the journey.
